Padres' latest deal sends Trammell to Mariners

There's active at the Trade Deadline, and then there's what San Diego has been doing this weekend.

The Padres completed another big deal ahead of Monday's deadline. Their latest blockbuster sent Taylor Trammell, baseball's No. 60 overall prospect, to the Mariners on Sunday. In addition to the 22-year-old outfielder, Seattle scored catcher Luis Torrens, infielder Ty France and right-hander Andres Munoz in the deal, San Diego picked up Major League catcher Austin Nola and righties Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla.

“We are excited to add four talented players to the Mariners organization, all of whom are playing in their age-25 or younger seasons," Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto said. "Ty France has shown the ability to play the corners of the diamond, while providing pop at the plate. Andres Muñoz is an electric arm, who at 21, has already gained experience at the Big League level. Luis Torrens receives well behind the plate and has the ability to be a productive hitter at the Major League level. Taylor Trammell is a dynamic player who has an advanced left-handed bat, speed on the bases and above-average defense in the outfield.”

In his first four professional seasons, Trammell posted a .270/.363/.406 slash line with 251 runs, 195 RBIs, 33 homers and 110 stolen bases in 426 games while ascending to Double-A Amarillo. The new sixth-ranked Mariners prospect struggled in the Texas League, though, batting .229 over the course of 32 games. But then he got to play hero in the Texas League championship finale in 2019, belting a grand slam in the ninth inning that vaulted the Sod Poodles to the title in their inaugural season. That proved to be his last at-bat in the San Diego organization.

The native of Powder Springs, Georgia, was a Futures Game selection the previous two seasons and was named the Most Valuable Player after homering and tripling in the 2018 midseason contest. MiLB.com deemed Trammell an Organization All-Star three straight years from 2016-18. Other accolades include the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars (2018), Florida State League midseason and postseason All-Star (2018) and Southern League midseason All-Star (2019).

It marked the second organizational move for Trammell, who was taken by Cincinnati with the 35th overall pick in the 2016 Draft. The two-sport athlete decided to forsake a commitment to Georgia State in favor of an above-slot bonus of $3.2 million.

MLB Pipeline gives Trammell an overall 55 on a 20-to-80 grading scale, with 60 for his running tool, 55 for hitting and fielding, 50 for power and 45 for his arm.

San Diego picked up Major League first baseman Mitch Moreland earlier in the day by sending prospects Hudson Potts and Jeisson Rosario to Boston. On Saturday, the Padres also landed veteran reliever Trevor Rosenthal for outfield prospect Edward Olivares.
