GRANVILLE, W.V. – Blake Seigler collected the rare accomplishment of four strikeouts in one inning, and the State College Spikes stole four more bases as a team, but Garrett Spain put together a five-hit game that included four doubles and five runs batted in to power the West Virginia Black Bears past the Spikes, 14-3, on Saturday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.
Seigler, who came to the Spikes from the University of South Carolina-Aiken, finished the game for the Spikes (14-19) in the eighth. The right-hander struck out leadoff man Franklin Minyety, but saw him reach base on a passed ball during the third strike. After yielding a single to Tucker Mitchell, Seigler buckled down and struck out the next three batters in order to complete the rarity.
Mark Vierling led the way in the running game for State College with two stolen bases, and added a hit.
However, it was Spain doing much of the offensive damage for the Black Bears (19-9). The Austin Peay product drove in two runs apiece with two-baggers in the second and sixth innings, with an RBI double in the fifth in between. Spain also laid down a bunt single, stole a base and scored three runs in the effort.
West Virginia also received three hits each from Kyle Hess, who drove in three runs, and Max Wright as part of a 17-hit attack that included eight extra-base hits. The Black Bears increased their lead in the Major League Baseball Draft League standings to 1 ½ games with the win.
Marques Paige posted the Spikes’ lone multi-hit game and drove in one of the three runs that State College posted in the sixth. Lukas Cook and Tyler Heckert knocked in the other runs in the frame.
Spikes starter Chase Watkins (0-2) took the loss after yielding seven runs, five of them earned, on ten hits, a walk, and a hit batsman over four innings. Watkins recorded six strikeouts during the night.
Black Bears starter Joshua South (1-0) earned the win with five scoreless innings. South allowed three hits and one walk while posting six strikeouts.
The Spikes will now head home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a Fourth of July game to start a two-game series against the Trenton Thunder. The 5:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Josh Culliver (0-1) out of Minnesota getting his first start as a Spike. Trenton has not yet named a starter.
