RENO, NV (June 17) - The Storm Chasers couldn't overcome a huge 1st inning deficit, as Reno eased to an 8-6 victory over Omaha on Sunday afternoon at Greater Nevada Field.
Reno wasted no time in taking control in the 1st. Ildemaro Vargas doubled, César Puello singled, and with 2 out, Sócrates Brito singled to make it 2-0. Anthony Recker followed with a single, and Yasmany Tomás walked to load the bases. Rey Fuentes doubled home 3 runs, and he scored on a Kristopher Negrón triple. Ildemaro Vargas capped the inning with an RBI double (his second hit of the frame), making it 7-0 Aces.
Jon Dziedzic (L, 3-6) was relieved after recording just 2 outs; he was charged with 7 runs, 7 hits, and 1 walk.
Omaha pulled 2 runs back in the top of the 4th. Ramón Torres and Jorge Bonifacio walked, Torres went to 3rd on a fly ball, and Frank Schwindel scored Torres with an infield single. After a walk to Jack Lopez loaded the bases, Humberto Arteaga lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Bonifacio home, cutting the deficit to 7-2.
Reno made it 8-2 in the bottom of the 4th on a walk to Kevin Cron and singles by Socrates Brito and Anthony Recker. The Chasers reduced it to 8-3 in the top of the 5th, as Ramon Torres singled, went to 3rd on a double by Jorge Bonifacio, and scored on a 2-out error.
Bradin Hagens (W, 3-3) labored through 5 innings for Reno; he allowed 3 runs (2 earned), while scattering 5 hits and 4 walks. He struck out 1.
Humberto Arteaga drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 7th, bringing the score to 8-4. He knocked in Frank Schwindel, who had singled and moved to 3rd on a double by Jack Lopez.
Arnaldo Hernandez pitched 4.1 innings of long-relief for Omaha, allowing just 1 run. Richard Lovelady followed with scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th.
Omaha inched closer in the top of the 8th; Billy Burns singled, and Ramon Torres tripled to make it 8-5. But The Chasers stranded 2 runners, and left 12 on base in the game.
Sam Selman worked a scoreless 8th inning, as the Omaha bullpen allowed just 1 run in 7.1 total innings.
In the top of the 9th, Jack Lopez singled, and Humberto Arteaga notched his 3rd RBI of the game with a double to center field. But Silvino Bracho recorded the final 3 outs, and earned his 4th save of the year.
The Storm Chasers (31-37) will continue the series in Reno tomorrow night at 3:05 Central. RHP Trevor Oaks (3-3, 2.29) will toss for Omaha, while the Aces will send RHP Jake Buchanan (4-6, 4.84) to the mound.
