Cohen knocks four hits in 9-2 Squirrels loss

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – Trevor Cohen had four hits but the Richmond Flying Squirrels lost to the Somerset Patriots, 9-2, on Friday night at TD Bank Ballpark.

The Flying Squirrels (58-40, 15-15 second half) led early before a burst of runs by the Patriots (53-47, 16-15) from the fifth through seventh innings.

Cohen went 4-for-5 with a double and stole three bases. In his last five games since Sunday, Cohen is batting .545 (12-for-22) with two doubles, two RBIs and eight stolen bases.

In the top of the first inning, Cohen led off with a double and scored on a double by Dayson Croes to open a 1-0 Flying Squirrels lead.

Jean Carlos Sió singled to lead off the second, stole second, stole third and scored on a throwing error to extend the lead to 2-0.

Charlie McDaniel (Loss, 3-2) stretched his scoreless streak to 13.1 innings before a two-run double by Coby Morales tied the score, 2-2, in the bottom of the fifth.

Josh Moylan lifted a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to move the Patriots ahead, 3-2. Two batters later, Kevin Verde hit a two-run homer to open a 5-2 lead for Somerset, ending the outing for McDaniel.

The Patriots scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead 9-2, including RBI singles by Josh Moylan and Manny Palencia, an RBI double by Luis Durango and a sacrifice fly by Connor McGinnis.

Richmond went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position for the second straight game and stranded 11 runners on base, including six in scoring position.

The series continues on Saturday night. Left-hander Tyler Switalski (0-3, 9.95) will start for Richmond opposed by Somerset right-hander Chase Hampton (0-3, 6.75). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark.
