Binghamton, NY - Flying Squirrels starting pitchers Cory Taylor and Shaun Anderson each dealt six innings to lead Richmond over Binghamton in a doubleheader sweep Wednesday at NYSEG Stadium. Richmond (23-19) took the opener 3-1 and won the night cap 4-1. All seven runs score by Richmond in the sweep occurred with two outs in an inning. The Squirrels conclude the three-game series on Thursday morning at 10:35 a.m.
Game One
Cory Taylor headlined the win in game one with six solid innings to lead the Squirrels to a 3-1 victory Wednesday. Taylor (6-1) allowed just one run on three hits to earn his sixth win of the season. The righty walked four and struck out four while using 96 pitches in the effort.
The Rumble Ponies struck first when Joey Wong led off the third inning with a solo home run to right field. Wong's homer run occurred in his first at bat with Binghamton and was the only run allowed by Taylor in the outing.
The Squirrels were initially baffled by Rumble Ponies starting pitcher Nabil Crismatt. The righty held the Squirrels without a hit through the first four innings on Wednesday with an array of off speed pitches, up until two outs in the fifth inning. Crismatt began to falter once Luigi Rodriguez floated the first hit of the day into left centerfield. Jerry Sands then roped a double off the top of the left center field fence, tying the game, 1-1. Ryan Howard followed with an RBI single into center and after K.C. Hobson singled off the wall in right, Aramis Garcia made it a 3-1 contest. The Squirrels collected five consecutive hits, all with two outs to take the lead.
Crismatt (5-2) suffered the loss for Binghamton. He allowed three runs on five hits in the outing.
Richmond closer Caleb Simpson worked around a pair of walks in the seventh inning to secure his eighth save of the year. Simpson induced a game-ending double play off the bat of Kevin Taylor.
Game Two
Squirrels starting pitcher Shaun Anderson picked up where Cory Taylor left off in game one. Anderson (5-2) cruised through six innings, striking out seven to earn the win. The righty walked the first batter he faced but quickly regained composure with a pair of strikeouts to end the first.
Richmond backed Anderson with an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two. With two outs, Dillon Dobson roped a double off the track in left field and Dylan Davis followed with an RBI base hit into left field.
The Squirrels created some space in the fifth inning, scoring three more runs, all with two outs, to move ahead 4-0. Dobson smacked a base hit and Dylan Davis followed suit. The two singled set up Aramis Garcia for a three-run shot over the left field fence. Garcia's third home run of the season sparked the Squirrels and was the difference in the game. Dobson had three hits in the contest.
Anderson's only blip on the radar was a solo home run allowed to Peter Alonso in the sixth inning. Alonso drove his 12th homer of the season over the right centerfield wall. Anderson retired the next two batters to end his outing on 86 pitches.
Dillon McNamara entered for the seventh inning and retired the side in order to earn his first save of the season.
Binghamton's Marcos Molina suffered the loss. Molina (1-4) allowed the four runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out three in the defeat.
The Flying Squirrels wrap up the three-game series in Binghamton on Thursday morning at 10:35 a.m. RHP Jordan Johnson (5-3, 2.96) is scheduled to make the start against Rumble Ponies RHP Scott Copeland Richmond is currently on a seven-game swing to Binghamton and Akron and will return home on Tuesday, May 29 for an extended Memorial Day Celebration. - Tim Tebow connected on a pinch-hit single during the fifth inning of game one.
- Matt Lipka made his first start of the season at second and Aramis Garcia made his first start at first base. Lipka committed three errors in the contest.
- Dillon Dobson collected his first three-hit game of the year. Dobson went 3-4 in game two of the doubleheader.
- McNamara earned his first save as a Flying Squirrel and his 29th career save.
- Shaun Anderson has lasted at least five innings in all nine starts this season.
