Late rally falls short in 8-7 Squirrels loss

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels fell behind by eight runs early and lost to the Chesapeake Baysox, 8-7, on Wednesday night at CarMax Park.

The Flying Squirrels (73-59, 30-34) extended their season-high losing streak to seven games, including the first two games of this week’s series against the Baysox (65-67, 36-28).

The Baysox opened an 8-0 lead through the third inning. The Flying Squirrels opened their scoring in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Dakota Jordan.

Richmond scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to close the score to 8-4. Trevor Cohen led off with a double and scored on a double by Dayson Croes. After an infield hit and a walk to load the bases, Lisbel Diaz grounded out to bring home a run. Jancel Villarroel followed with an RBI single, but Sabin Ceballos was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Croes hit a three-run double to close the score to 8-7. He advanced to third on a groundout before Baysox reliever Micah Ashman (Save, 5) recorded a strikeout to end the game.

Croes tied went 4-for-5, tying his career high for hits, and tied his career high with four RBIs. He also had four doubles, tying a single-game franchise record. He matched previous records set by Charlie Culberson (2011), Juan Perez (2012), Jarrett Parker (2014), Aramis Garcia (2017), Dylan Davis (2018), Brett Auerbach (2022) and Christian Koss (2024) and was the first player in team history with a three-double game at home.

The Baysox took a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Flying Squirrels starter Charlie McDaniel (Loss, 3-5). Griff O’Ferrall led off the game with a solo homer. Two batters later, Ethan Anderson hit a two-run homer.

In the top of the third, Aron Estrada hit a two-run single, a run scored on an error and Colin Tuft hit a two-run double to extend the Chesapeake lead to 8-0.

The Richmond bullpen combined for 6.2 scoreless innings. Shane Rademacher took over in the third and allowed one hit with no walks and four strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Dale Stanavich struck out three over 1.1 innings. Mitch White covered the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run.

The series continues on Thursday night. Right-hander Niko Mazza (0-1, 5.40) will start for Richmond opposed by Chesapeake right-hander Anthony Eyanson (6-1, 1.80). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at CarMax Park.
