Rally falls short in 4-3 Squirrels loss

BOWIE, Md. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels fell to the Chesapeake Baysox, 4-3, on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium.

The Flying Squirrels (69-48, 26-23 second half) against the Baysox (56-61, 27-22) snapped, stranding two runners on base in the ninth.

The Baysox took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third with back-to-back RBI doubles by Fernando Peguero and Wehiwa Aloy.

In the top of the fourth, Charlie Szykowny closed the score to 2-1 with a two-out RBI single.

Jancel Villarroel hit a solo homer, his second at Double-A, in the top of the fifth to tie the score, 2-2.

The Baysox moved back ahead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run by Peguero.

Colin Tuft stretched the Chesapeake lead to 4-2 with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Richmond starter Charlie McDaniel (Loss, 3-3) allowed four runs over 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.

In the top of the ninth, Richmond worked back-to-back, one-out walks and Zane Zielinski singled in a run to close the score to 4-3. Chesapeake reliver Gerald Ogando (Save, 3) struck out the next two batters to end the game.

Baysox starter JT Quinn (Win, 1-0) allowed two runs over five innings.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Greg Farone (5-10, 5.68) will start for Richmond opposed by Chesapeake left-hander Sebastian Gongora (9-6, 3.88). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at Prince George’s Stadium.
