Squirrels outlast Sea Dogs in back-and-forth battle

The Flying Squirrels (71-47, 28-23 second half) picked up their league-leading 29th one-run win of the season. The Sea Dogs (60-60, 25-27) lost their fifth straight game.
Richmond opened the scoring in the first inning without a hit. Trevor Cohen led off with a walk and later scored on a passed ball. Lisbel Diaz drove home a run with a groundout for a 2-0 Flying Squirrels lead.

In the third, Dayson Croes attempted to steal second before being caught in a rundown and tagged out. On the play, Cohen scored from third. Sabin Ceballos followed with a solo homer, his 16th of the season, to open a 4-0 Flying Squirrels lead.
Trystan Vrieling worked around four hits and two walks in his first four innings before the Sea Dogs struck for a two-out, two-run homer by Justin Gonzales in the fifth, cutting the score to 4-2. He finished his day with two runs allowed over five innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Zane Zielinkski led off with a double and later scored on a single by Croes. Lisbel Diaz brought home Cohen with a sacrifice fly to extend the Richmond lead to 6-2.
The Sea Dogs scored four runs in the top of the sixth, all with two outs, to tie the score, 6-6. Max Furguson hit an RBI double, Gonzales singled in a run and Henry Godbout tied the game with a two-run single.

Richmond moved back ahead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI single by Cohen against Portland reliever Tyler Davis (Loss, 1-2).

Croes followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 8-6.
After back-to-back walks by Logan Martin (Win, 3-1) and a walk by Mitch White loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth, Johanfran Garcia singled to close the score to 8-7. After a strikeout, Tyler McDonough attempted to score on a pitch in the dirt but was tagged out near home plate for the second out. White recorded a strikeout to strand runners at second and third.

Jack Choate (Save, 1) worked a 1-2-3 ninth to finish the game, picking up the first save of his professional career.
The Sea Dogs went 5-for-17 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners on base.
The series continues Wednesday night. Right-hander Yunior Marte (2-4, 3.92) will start for Richmond opposed by Portland lefty Hayden Mullins (3-5, 4.80). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at CarMax Park.
