Pearl, MS - The Mobile BayBears fell for the fourth straight time, coming up a run shy in a 2-1 loss to the Mississippi Braves on Monday night at Trustmark Park. With the win, the M-Braves stretched their first-place lead over the BayBears to four games in the Southern League South Division Standings. Monday was the 48th game the BayBears have played in this season that was decided by one-run. Mobile is now just 23-25 in those games.
For the second straight night, Mobile (24-20, 56-58) fell behind early. The B-Braves pushed across their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Ozzie Albies began the frame with a lead-off base hit and then advanced to second when Conner Lien was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, with just one out, Carlos Franco drove in Albies with a RBI single to give the Braves a 1-0 advantage.
The BayBears evened the score with a run just half an inning later in the top off the second inning. With one out, Rudy Flores singled and then scored in the next at bat when Dawel Lugo doubled in Flores with a hit to right.
The second-inning run would be all the BayBears would score Monday night. Mississippi (28-16, 62-51) got a great start from RHP Lucas Sims (4-3). The righty limited Mobile to just the one run on five hits, walking three and striking out six batters in seven innings of work.
The Braves gave Sims a lead after scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Albies again began the inning with a double, his third hit of the game. After a sacrifice but by Lein moved Albies to third, Dustin Peterson broke the 1-1 tie with a RBI single to score Albies from third and give Mississippi the 2-1 lead and eventual win.
It was a tough loss to take for BayBears starting RHP Vicente Campos (1-1). In just his second start since coming over from the Yankees organization in a trade last week, the righty allowed just the two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out two in six innings on the mound.
