B-Mets End Homestand with DH Split

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets split a doubleheader with the Trenton Thunder on Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. They were shut out, 1-0 in the first game before winning the nightcap, 6-1 highlighted by a dominating pitching performance from Noah Syndergaard.

Game One
The B-Mets were limited to four hits in the first game of the day, as they were defeated by the Thunder, 1-0. It was the sixth time this season they have been shut out, and the second time in this series.

Carmen Angelini provided the decisive hit in the second inning for the Thunder. After Andrew Clark led off the inning with a double against Logan Verrett, Angelini brought him home with an RBI double into the left-centerfield gap.

On the mound, Verrett threw five innings and only allowed three base hits. The righty stuck out seven and did not walk a single batter, but did not receive any offensive support.

Fred Lewis started for Trenton, and struck out six before leaving the game with an injury after 3.2 innings. Aaron Dott threw four pitches after replacing Lewis, and struck out his only batter to end the fourth inning. David Herndon threw the next two innings on the mound for Trenton. Binghamton threatened against the righthander, but could not crack the scoreboard. In the bottom of the fifth, Casey Stevenson made a diving catch at third base to rob Darrell Ceciliani of a base hit with two men on.

In the seventh, Tommy Kahnle finished the game, and earned his 13th save of the season. He walked Alonzo Harris, but picked him off first base to end the game. Binghamton was held to four hits or less for the fourth straight time in the series. The offense went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, and never put a runner on third base.

Game Two
Noah Syndergaard and Rhyne Hughes stole the show in the nightcap as the B-Mets beat the Thunder, 6-1. Syndergaard faced one over the minimum through six innings, and Hughes tied a franchise record with three doubles in the victory.

Syndergaard was nothing short of dominant as he led the B-Mets to the win. In six innings pitched the righty threw 59 pitches, and 47 of them for strikes. He reached a two-ball count to only two batters all night, and struck out eight in the process. His only baserunner he allowed was a solo home run given up to Slade Heathcott with two outs in the first inning.

The B-Mets responded to the home run in the second with their first burst of offense on the day. Hughes hit the top of the left field wall for his first double against Zach Nuding, and Travis Taijeron brought him home with an RBI double into the gap. With two outs in the inning, Wilfredo Tovar gave Binghamton their first lead of the day with an RBI single up the middle.

In the third, they tacked on two more runs. Cesar Puello scored Danny Muno with an RBI double down the left field line, and Hughes drove home another with a double up the first base line. The final insurance runs came in the sixth, when Hughes hit his third double of the night to score two runs.

Syndergaard (4-0) lowered his ERA to 2.25 in his outing on the mound. After six innings, he was replaced by Ryan Fraser. Fraser allowed a two-out single, but got Carmen Angelini to fly out to end the game. Nuding (5-11) took the loss after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings.

Binghamton (66-41) has an off day on Monday. They then hit the road for a six-game roadtrip beginning with three in Altoona against the Curve. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 7:00 PM as Binghamton sends LHP Mark Cohoon to the mound against RHP Nick Kingham. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

POSTGAME NOTES: Monday will end a stretch of 21 games in 18 days for the B-Mets…Binghamton is 1-0-5 in doubleheaders this season; in all five splits, they have lost the opener before winning the nightcap…the last B-Met to hit three doubles in one game was Nick Evans vs. Portland on July 27, 2010
