Dykstra Leads the Way on Award-Winning Night

Dykstra hits 21st home run in victory
September 1, 2013

BINGHAMTON, NY - Allan Dykstra took center stage as the Binghamton Mets defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 6-2 on Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. Dykstra was named as Binghamton's Team MVP prior the game, hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning, and was recognized as the Eastern League Most Valuable Player after the contest.

The B-Mets got on the scoreboard first in the third inning against Marcus Walden. Joe Bonfe started the rally with an infield single to third base. A throwing error on the play allowed him to move to second base with nobody out. Three batters later, Josh Rodriguez delivered with an RBI single back up the middle.

Logan Verrett worked into a groove in his 24th start of the season. After allowing a leadoff double in the first inning, he retired 12 straight hitters. In the fifth, Ryan Schimpf ended the stretch with a single down the right field line. After striking out Kevin Ahrens, Verrett gave up a two-run home run to Lance Zuwadski to give New Hampshire a 2-1 lead.

Binghamton responded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rodriguez led off the frame with his third hit of the night, and Dykstra gave the B-Mets the lead for good with a two-run shot. They added to the cushion in the bottom of the seventh with three unearned runs against Chad Beck. They scored the runs with only one base hit. Xorge Carrillo scored on a throwing error by Beck, and back-to-back sacrifice flies made it a 6-2 game.

Verrett left the game after five strong innings. He only allowed three hits, and handed the ball to Jim Fuller in the sixth. The lefty threw two scoreless innings and only gave up one hit to collect his third win of the season. Frank Francisco and Adam Kolarek each threw a harmless inning to preserve the lead, as the B-Mets collected their 86th win of the season.

The B-Mets (86-54) and Fisher Cats (67-72) finish up the 2013 regular season on Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton will send LHP Mark Cohoon to the mound to take on RHP Marcus Stroman for the Fisher Cats. First pitch is set for 1:05, with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show beginning at 12:50 PM on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
