Bees, Angels Announce 2020 Field Staff

SALT LAKE CITY (January 16, 2020) - Lou Marson will return as manager for the 2020 Salt Lake Bees, the Los Angeles Angels and Bees announced today. Returning with Marson will be hitting coach Brian Betancourth, defensive coach Ray Olmedo, athletic trainer Brian Reinker and strength & conditioning coach Adam Smith. Pitching coach Jairo Cuevas (high-ro KWAY-vas) is the only new member of the field staff.

Marson is back for a second season as Bees manager. Last season Marson oversaw the development of Griffin Canning, Luis Rengifo, Patrick Sandoval, Matt Thaiss and Jared Walsh before each would go on to make their Major League debut. A former Major League catcher, Marson spent six seasons with the Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Phillies before transitioning to coaching, beginning in 2017 when he was the hitting coach for Salt Lake.
Cuevas moves up in the Angels organization after spending last season as the pitching coach for Double-A Mobile. A native of the Dominican Republic, Cuevas spent six seasons as a Minor League pitcher in the Braves and Royals organizations. Cuevas has coached in the Angels organization since 2015 with stops with the AZL Angels and Burlington Bees.
Betancourth returns for a second season as hitting coach after overseeing a record setting offense in 2019. Under Betancourth's guidance the Bees hit a franchise record 222 home runs, including a Salt Lake single-season record tying 36 from Jared Walsh. Betancourth has been a coach in the Angels organization since 2012 spending time with the Orem Owlz, AZL Angels and Inland Empire 66ers.
Olmedo enters his third season in Salt Lake as the defensive coach. The Venezuelan native played professionally for 17 seasons including Major League stints with the Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago White and parts of 12 seasons at the Triple-A level.
Reinker will serve as the Salt Lake trainer for the 13th consecutive season and is in his 17th season with the Angels organization. In 2015, Reinker was named the Pacific Coast League Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society.
Smith is in his second season as strength & conditioning coach with the Bees and has been in the Angels system since November 2015. Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from State University of New York College at Cortland and interned at Binghamton, Syracuse and Eastern Michigan University prior to starting his professional career.
