Lawson and Morejon Look Sharp, Flying Chanclas Shutout by Midland 

SAN ANTONIO – After Wednesday night saw the Flying Chanclas record their second no-hitter in three games, San Antonio ran into some trouble on Thursday night. Jack Cushing tossed eight shutout innings while holding the Chanclas to four hits. The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio were shutout by the RockHounds by a final score of 3-0.

Reggie Lawson was the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas. After retiring the first three batters in order, Lawson had to pitch out of a jam in the second inning. With two outs in the inning, Jeremy Eierman doubled to immediately place himself in scoring position. Michael Guldberg hit a ground ball up the middle and Domingo Leyba made a diving stop. On the play, Leyba threw to third base and the Chanclas were able to tag out Eierman who had rounded third base.

Lawson had to pitch himself out of another jam in the top of the third inning. William Simoneit hit a lead-off single. After recording the first out of the inning, Max Schuemann drew a walk. With two runners on and one out, Lawson induced an inning-ending double play.

Jack Cushing was the starting pitcher for the Midland RockHounds. Cushing kept the Chanclas out of the hit column until the third inning. Tirso Ornelas began the bottom of the third inning with a double down the right field line. Ornelas was left stranded after two fly outs and a ground out.

In the top of the fourth inning, play was stopped as the umpires and the Chanclas trainer were examining Lawson’s right hand. He remained in the game until the top of the fifth inning. After allowing back-to-back walks to Michael Guldberg and Simoneit, Lawson was removed from the game after further concern over his hand. Nolan Watson inherited two runners on base with one out. Watson recorded back-to-back ground outs to keep it a scoreless game.

The Midland RockHounds took the first lead of the game after scoring three runs off Watson in the top of the sixth inning. Chase Calabuig was hit by a pitch to start the inning before being forced out at second base in the next at-bat. Logan Davidson was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Jordan Diaz drove in both runners with a double to left field. After recording the second out of the inning, Michael Guldberg hit a single to score Diaz. Midland took a 3-0 lead.

Adrian Morejon pitched the eighth inning for the Chanclas. He joined San Antonio prior to Wednesday’s game as he continues his rehab assignment. He struck out two of the three batters he faced. His fastball was electric as he reached 99 mph multiple times during the inning.

The Flying Chanclas had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the eighth inning. Chris Givin drew a one-out walk. After a Chandler Seagle strikeout, Esteury Ruiz reached base on a bunt single. With the single, he has reached base in all 36 games this season. Connor Hollis grounded out to end the scoring threat.

Left-hander Ty Damron (1-1, 6.31) is scheduled to start for the RockHounds. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
