Yohander Méndez took a no-hitter into the seventh in Frisco's 3-0 win over San Antonio Friday night before a sellout crowd of 6,250 at Wolff Stadium.
San Antonio entered play riding a season-best eight-game win streak. But from the beginning Friday, Mendez was going to make it very difficult for the streak to grow any further.
The 6-5 lefty breezed through the early innings, allowing just three base runners through four, all of which coming via the free pass.
His offense provided an early lead in the second when Royce Bolinger connected on a two-run homer to right center off reigning Texas League Pitcher of the Week, Brett Kennedy. The 'Riders tacked on another against Kennedy in the fifth when Scott Heineman followed a Matt Lipka one-out triple with a single to right.
Kennedy (2-2) fanned six in his five innings, while only surrendering four hits. However, his mound opponent was tough to beat.
San Antonio remained hitless through six, but finally broke through in the seventh when Nick Torres led off the frame with a single to right. The Missions looked poised for a rally when Alberth Martinez followed with a single of his own. However, Mendez (2-2) quickly erased most of the threat when he got newcomer Ty France to bang into a double play. The southpaw escaped the jam entirely after getting River Stevens to bounce out to second.
Reed Garrett kept the Missions off the board over the final two innings to earn his second save of the season and complete the RoughRiders' second shutout of 2017. It was the first time all season the Missions were blanked.
San Antonio (19-15) resumes its four-game series with Frisco (15-19) Saturday at 7:05 PM. Kyle Lloyd (3-3, 4.00) will take the hill for the Missions, while the RoughRiders counter with fellow righty Collin Wiles (3-0, 2.63). Following the game there will be a special fireworks show courtesy of Kahlig Auto Group.
Notes: France arrived from High-A Lake Elsinore. Felipe Blanco was transferred to Extended Spring as the corresponding move. Luis Urías went 0-for-4 to snap his club, season-high 23-game on-base streak.
