Missions Drop Sunday Night Doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO – The Missions fell victim to their second seven-inning no-hitter in game one against Amarillo. The Missions also dropped game two against the Sod Poodles after blowing a 1-0 lead.

In game one, it was Brett Kennedy against Luis Frias and Frias dominated for seven innings.

Frias completed the seven-inning no-hitter while allowing one baserunner on a walk to Kelvin Melean. Amarillo previously no-hit the Missions on July 11th. Frias struck out six batters during his seven-inning performance.

Kennedy made his first appearance with San Antonio since 2017. The right-hander allowed one earned run in four innings of work.

Buddy Kennedy hit a solo home run for the Sod Poodles in the fourth inning to give them a 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Dominic Fletcher hit a two-run homer to increase their lead to 3-0. Alek Thomas left the yard for a solo home run in the sixth inning to make it a 4-0 lead.

In game two, it was Matt Waldron against Tyler Holton. The Missions gained an early lead in the first inning.

With one out, Esteury Ruiz hit a double down the left-field line. Jose Azocar drove him in with an RBI single. The Missions took an early 1-0 lead.

After four scoreless innings, Amarillo tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Sod Poodles loaded the bases after two singles and a walk. Dominic Miroglio tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Amarillo took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jancarlos Cintron began the inning with a single and advanced to second on a balk. After two outs and a walk, Dominic Canzone gave Amarillo the lead with an RBI single.

Matt Waldron recorded the loss after recording a complete game. Waldron allowed two earned runs in six innings of work while allowing six hits.

  • 2nd time being no-hit against Amarillo, both in seven innings

The Missions have a scheduled day off on Monday before beginning a six game homestand against the Corpus Christi Hooks on Tuesday, August 3rd. The pitching matchups have yet to be determined. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday.
