Missions Fall to the Sod Poodles on Tatis, Jr. Bobblehead Night

SAN ANTONIO – Missions pitchers allowed 16 hits to the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Friday night. Amarillo hit three home runs during the night and defeated the Missions by a final score of 8-1. Tyler Viza was the starting pitcher for the Missions and he was making his third start

SAN ANTONIO – Missions pitchers allowed 16 hits to the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Friday night. Amarillo hit three home runs during the night and defeated the Missions by a final score of 8-1.

Tyler Viza was the starting pitcher for the Missions and he was making his third start since joining the club. He fell behind early courtesy of the long ball. The second batter of the game, Ryder Jones, launched a solo home run over the right field wall. His eighth homer of the season gave Amarillo an early 1-0 lead.

The long ball was a problem once again in the top of the second inning. Leading off the inning, Dominic Canzone lifted a fly ball over the right field wall. His fifth home run of the season made it a 2-0 Amarillo lead.

The San Antonio Missions collected their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Allen Cordoba started the inning with a ground-rule double to center field. After a fly out, Michael Curry drove him in with an RBI double down the right field line.

For the third consecutive inning, the Amarillo Sod Poodles added runs to the scoreboard. They improved their lead to 4-1 after scoring twice in the top of the third inning. Luis Basabe drew a lead-off walk. He came around to score on an RBI double from Jancarlos Cintron. After a single from Jones, Stone Garrett drove in Cintron with an RBI single.

The Missions had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with runners on the corners and no outs. Eguy Rosario began the inning with a double followed by a single from Allen Cordoba. Kyle Overstreet struck out looking for out number one. Michael Curry struck out looking for out number two. Dwanya Williams-Sutton also struck out looking to end the inning.

Amarillo continued to increase their lead with a two-run sixth inning. Eduardo Diaz and Andy Yerzy both hit singles to start the inning. Dominic Miroglio hit a single to load the bases with nobody out. Basabe provided the big hit of the inning with a two-run single to center field. The Sod Poodles had a 6-1 advantage.

The Sod Poodles launched their third home run of the night in the top of the eighth inning. Facing Mason Fox, Dominic Miroglio took the second pitch of the inning over the left field fence for a solo home run. After a one-out walk to Cintron, Jones hit a double to left field to score Cintron and make it an 8-1 ballgame.

The San Antonio Missions continue their seven-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Saturday, September 4th. Left-hander Jerry Keel (1-3, 5.40) is scheduled to start for the Missions. Right-hander Drey Jameson (3-0, 2.51) is the scheduled starter for Amarillo. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
