Ona Collects Two Hits and a Homer as Chanclas Drop Third Straight to the Hooks

SAN ANTONIO – The Flying Chanclas returned to Nelson Wolff Stadium for Thursday night baseball against the Corpus Christi Hooks. For the third consecutive game, the Hooks took an early lead and never looked back. Corpus Christi scored three runs in the first inning and twice in the fourth inning.

For the third consecutive game, the Hooks took an early lead and never looked back. Corpus Christi scored three runs in the first inning and twice in the fourth inning. C.J. Stubbs hit two homers to cap off a 3-for-4 night. San Antonio drops their third straight game with an 8-2 final score.

Henry Henry was the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio. Similar to games one and two of this series, the Hooks jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Corpus Christi scored three runs on three hits. With one out in the inning, Quincy Hamilton drew a walk and Shay Whitcomb doubled to drive him in. After recording the second out of the inning, Will Wagner hit a double to score Whitcomb. Lastly, Alex McKenna drove in Wagner with a base hit to center field. The Hooks took a 3-0 lead.

Misael Tamarez was the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas. He had to pitch out of a jam in the bottom half of the first inning. Connor Hollis began the inning with a base hit to right field. Juan Fernandez grounded into a force out with Hollis out at second base. Yorman Rodriguez drew a two-out walk to extend the inning. With two runners on and two outs, Kelvin Melean struck out to end the inning.

San Antonio plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. With one out in the inning, Jorge Ona hit a line drive home run to left field. His seventh long ball of the season made it a 3-1 ballgame. This was Ona’s first homer since June 23rd.

Corpus Christi improved their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Cesar Salazar began the inning with a single to right field. After striking out Grae Kessinger, Salazar stole second base. He advanced to third base after C.J. Stubbs singled to left field. Ross Adolph drew a walk to load the bases. Hamilton drove in Salazar and Stubbs with a single to left-center field. The Hooks extended their lead to 5-1.

The Hooks used the long ball to add another run to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Facing Fred Schlichtholz, Stubbs hit a home run to left field. His seventh homer of the season made it a 6-1 Hooks lead.

It became an 8-1 ballgame in the top of the eighth inning. Facing Alek Jacob, Alex McKenna drew a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. After striking out Salazar, McKenna was thrown out trying to steal third base. Kessinger drew a walk to extend the inning and advanced to second on a balk. Stubbs connected on his second home run of the game as he hit a line drive to left field.

The Flying Chanclas added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning but could have scored more. Facing Freylin Garcia, Hollis and Fernandez hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Ornelas drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Rodriguez drew a walk to bring in Hollis. Devin Conn came on to pitch in relief of Garcia. With the bases loaded and no outs, Melean and Mears both struck out and Ona flew out to end the scoring threat.

The San Antonio Missions will continue their six-game series with the Corpus Christi Hooks on Friday, September 2nd. The Missions have not yet announced their starter for Friday night. Right-hander Jose Bravo (7-4, 4.66) is scheduled to pitch for the Hooks. First pitch is expected at 7:05 p.m. from Nelson Wolff Stadium.
