San Antonio Scores Season High 14 Runs in Tuesday Win

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Missions began a six-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Tuesday night. The San Antonio offense set a new season high with 14 runs on 13 hits against the Sod Poodles. The Missions scored runs in six out of eight innings and claimed a game one victory with a final score of 14-4.

Efrain Contreras was the starting pitcher for the Missions. The right-hander allowed a leadoff triple to Ryan Bliss to start the game. Contreras struck out two of the next three batters and left Bliss stranded at third base.

Deyni Olivero was the starting pitcher for the Sod Poodles. The right-hander surrendered the lead after allowing one run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. With one out in the frame, Tirso Ornelas singled to right field. Pedro Castellanos hit a single and Ornelas advanced to third base. Ornelas came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Johnson. The Missions took an early 1-0 lead.

San Antonio added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning. Connor Hollis singled before Juan Fernandez grounded into a double play. Jorge Ona kept the inning alive with a double. Ripken Reyes drove in Ona with a base hit to right field.

The Missions made it a 4-0 ballgame in the bottom half of the third inning. With one out in the frame, Johnson drew a walk and stole second base. Michael De La Cruz singled and advanced to second base on the play. With two runners in scoring position, Korry Howell grounded out and Johnson came in to score. De La Cruz scored after Hollis reached on a throwing error from Jordan Lawlar.

After the first inning, Contreras cruised through the second, third and fourth innings. The fifth inning saw Amarillo plate three runs on three hits. Adrian Del Castillo started the inning with a double. After retiring the next two batters, Contreras allowed an RBI single to Bliss. Bliss stole second and Lawlar drew a walk. After executing a double steal, Caleb Roberts singled and drove in both runners. Lake Bachar took over on the mound and retired Seth Beer to end the inning. The Missions held a 4-3 lead.

San Antonio extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after scoring four runs on just one hit. Olivero walked the first three batters of the inning before being replaced by Austin Pope. Connor Hollis reached on an infield single and drove in a run. Two runs came in to score on a fielder’s choice from Juan Fernandez and a throwing error by Deyvison De Los Santos. The fourth run of the inning scored on a sacrifice bunt from Reyes. San Antonio improved their lead to 8-3.

The Missions plated three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Facing Austin Pope, Johnson and De La Cruz hit back-to-back singles. Howell drew a walk and loaded the bases. Johnson came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Hollis. Fernandez drove in two runs with a double to right field. On the play, he was tagged out trying to stretch it to a triple. San Antonio set a new season high with 11 runs scored.

The hit parade continued in the bottom of the seventh inning as San Antonio plated three runs on three hits. Facing Jake Rice, Reyes was hit by a pitch and Ornelas singled. The Missions loaded the bases after Castellanos was hit by a pitch. Johnson singled to drive in Reyes. On the play, Ornelas was thrown out at home and the other runners advanced into scoring position. De La Cruz doubled down the right field line to plate two more runs. San Antonio took a 14-4 lead.

The San Antonio Missions will continue their six-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Wednesday, May 24th. Right-hander Nolan Watson (2-2, 1.27) is expected to start for the Missions. Right-hander Jeff Bain (0-2, 7.52) is expected to start for the Sod Poodles. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. from Nelson Wolff Stadium.
