Chesny Young Promoted to Myrtle Beach, Andrew Ely Joins South Bend
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - South Bend Cubs infielder Chesny Young has been promoted to Class A-Advanced Myrtle Beach and infielder Andrew Ely has been added to the roster, the South Bend Cubs announced Wednesday.
The 22 year-old Young played in 28 games for South Bend, hitting .315 with no home runs, 14 runs batted in, scoring 23 runs and stealing nine bases.
Young was drafted in the 14th round by Chicago in 2014. The former Mercer standout batted .348 (.398 in league games) in 2014 after a 2013 season in which he nabbed Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year and All-American honors. Young, who graduated from Marist (Ga.) High School, became the highest-drafted player from Mercer since 2011.
The infielder hit .354 in 15 games with Short-Season Boise in 2014 before joining Kane County in the Midwest League. In 27 games with the Cougars, Young hit .324 with six doubles, two triples and nine RBI.
Young departs South Bend as the toughest hitter to strike out in the Midwest League (17.43 plate appearances per strikeout). His 23 runs scored rank second in the league.
In 72 total minor-league games, Young boasts a .322 average.
The 22-year old Ely was drafted by Chicago in the 32nd round in June out of the University of Washington. After an All-Pac-12 season in 2014, Ely played 25 games with the AZL Cubs in Mesa, hitting .326 with four home runs and seven RBI. Ely also appeared in nine games with Triple-A Iowa, hitting .229 with one home run and nine RBI.
Ely is active for South Bend's matchup with Lansing on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. ET at Four Winds Field.
