South Bend Beats Kane County 5-2
GENEVA, IL - The South Bend Cubs won the opener of their three game series at Kane County by beating the Cougars Saturday 5-2.
Bryant Flete extended his season high hitting streak to six games and gave South Bend a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the second inning that scored Eddy Martinez who had reached on a throwing error. Josh Silver sent South Bend to a 2-0 lead on a ground out that plated Tyler Alamo (double).
The Cubs scored two more runs in the third inning behind RBI hits by Donnie Dewees and Alamo to give South Bend a 4-0 advantage.
Kane County cut into the lead by scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings off South Bend starting pitcher Adbert Alzolay. The Venezuela native finished the night going six innings allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Alzolay earned the victory to improve his record to 6-4.
Dewees got involved in the action again in the seventh inning with his Midwest League leading 12th triple scoring Andrew Monasterio to stake South Bend to a 5-2 lead.
Tommy Nance earned his first save for South Bend after three shutout innings while striking out three.
Game two of the series is Sunday at 2:00pm(ET) with Carson Sands (7-2, 4.29) pitches for South Bend.
