South Bend, IN - In the series finale in Downtown South Bend between the South Bend Cubs and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, it was the Milwaukee Brewers Midwest League affiliate taking both the finale victory and series win away from the Cubs. In a 9-6 final, Wisconsin won the power packed final game of the week in a contest that featured 27 combined base hits.

Eight of the 15 runs in the game came across in the 1st inning, as both teams were out to hot starts with the bats. Tyler Schlaffer got the start for South Bend, with it being his first outing at Four Winds Field since 2022.

The South Chicago Suburbs native ran into trouble as Dylan O’Rae singled to begin the game. The next two batters also reached, and Luke Adams eventually crushed a three-run homer over the left field wall, and Ramon Rodriguez doubled for a 4-0 lead. It was the second straight day that Wisconsin led by at least three runs. Much like Saturday though, the Cubs came back with a vengeance.

South Bend immediately got to work on Wisconsin righty Edwin Jimenez. Brennen Davis started a strong day with an RBI base hit to get South Bend on the board. It was Davis’ second RBI in as many days, and he also walked twice.

Pedro Ramirez and Brian Kalmer continued the 1st inning comeback rally with base hits, and Parker Chavers tied the game at 4-4 on a sacrifice fly.

Schlaffer departed the game after 2.2 innings with the four runs allowed, and that gave way to right-hander Hunter Viets. Making his third appearance of the year, Viets held the Rattlers at first, but Wisconsin grabbed their four run lead right back with multiple tally’s in both the 4th and 5th innings.

Angel Gonzalez fired two scoreless innings out of the Cubs bullpen, and Joe Nahas also looked dominant in 2.1 shutout innings.

The middle frame rally for the Timber Rattlers was too much to overcome, although South Bend did squeeze across a couple more.

In the bottom of the 5th, Kalmer produced another RBI when he knocked a sacrifice fly into right. And in the 8th, Ethan Hearn singled home Rafael Morel. The Cubs had 12 hits in the game, and the two clubs combined for five errors.

Felix Stevens also picked up two more base hits after smashing a pair of home runs in the game on Saturday. 18-year-old shortstop Jefferson Rojas put together a two-hit day too.

With the loss, South Bend dropped the series four-games-to-two, and have their record sit at 3-6. Next up, the Cubs will head to Beloit to take on the Sky Carp at ABC Supply Stadium starting on Tuesday.
