GREENVILLE-- Matt Dennis made only his third start of the season for the Asheville Tourists on Tuesday night. The right-hander tossed a season high five innings and limited the Greenville Drive to only two hits, both singles. Asheville's offense came up big and the Tourists shutout the Drive 9-0.
Dennis' previous high in innings pitched for an individual outing this year was 3.2 frames. The Arlington Heights, Illinois native was prepared to enter the rotation for his first scheduled start (his first two starts were last minute spot starts) and did not allow a Drive player to reach second base in his five innings of work.
In the top of the third, Willie Abreu drove in Ryan Metzler from third with a single into left. That gave the Tourist a 1-0 lead. Asheville poured it on in the fourth. Max George ripped a two-run single into center and Jacob Bosiokovic added a tape-measure Home Run to put the visitors in front 5-0.
Abreu recorded a double in the fifth inning, his 100th hit of the year, and later scored on a Tyler Nevin RBI single. In the sixth, Metzler and Brian Serven contributed RBI singles while Carlos Herrera added an RBI groundout.
Asheville used four relief pitchers over the final four innings to complete the shutout. Austin Moore, Salvador Justo, Kenny Oakley, and Julian Fernandz all pitched one scoreless inning.
Bobby Wernes led the way with three hits but seven of Asheville's nine players recorded at least one hit and one run scored. The Tourists will attempt to sweep the Drive with Wednesday's series finale scheduled for 7:05pm.
