COLUMBIA, SC - The Fireflies picked up their 14th shut-out win of the season on Saturday night. Columbia bested Augusta, 3-0, behind a stellar performance from Harol Gonzalez at Spirit Communications Park. The right-hander flashed six scoreless innings and allowed only two hits on the mound.
Columbia (15-19, 55-48) scored first on a whacky play in the bottom of the third inning. Natanael Ramos recorded a one-out single. Later with two outs in the frame, J.J. Franco lifted a fly ball into shallow right field. Augusta's (14-21, 37-63) second baseman Kelvin Beltre dropped the pearl and right fielder Sandro Fabian picked it up. At that point, Ramos scored and Franco was on his way to third base. Fabian sailed his throw wide of the third-base bag, allowing Franco to score (two errors on the play). The home team led 2-0 after three stanzas.
Jacob Zanon and Colby Woodmansee aided the offense in the fourth frame. Zanon led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Brandon Brosher earned a free pass, Woodmansee cracked an RBI single and scored Zanon. The Fireflies held a 3-0 edge over the GreenJackets.
Gonzalez (W, 8-7) continued to show consistency in his 18th start of the season on Saturday night. The 22-year-old has lasted at least six innings in each of his last 11 starts. Adam Atkins and Matt Pobereyko breezed through three frames out of the bullpen. Pobereyko earned his first save of the season. He becomes the seventh Firefly to register a save in 2017.
Domenic Mazza (L, 6-9) was impressive for Augusta in his six innings of action. The southpaw logged a career-high 10 strikeouts and yielded just one earned run.
The Fireflies play their series finale against the Augusta GreenJackets on Sunday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Spirit Communications Park. Righty Chase Ingram (1-1, 2.00) is scheduled to make the start for Columbia. Right-hander Stephen Woods Jr. (5-7, 3.59) is on the mound for Augusta.
You can listen to the action on ESPN Columbia 94.9 FM and 1230 AM, ColumbiaFireflies.com and the TuneIn Radio app starting at 4:45 p.m.
