The Birmingham Barons scored three runs in the first two innings to defeat the Mississippi Braves 3-2 in the first game of the seven-inning doubleheader.

Barons (9-5) starting pitcher Jake Eder pitched 4.2 solid innings, giving up only five hits, two runs, two earned runs, and four walks with eight strikeouts. Adisyn Coffey (1-0) pitched 1.1 innings for the win. Caleb Freeman pitched the last inning for his first save of the season.

In the bottom of the first inning, Terrell Tatum led the game off with a base hit to left field. Brooks Baldwin then singled to left field, putting the runners at the corners. The next batter, Edgar Quero, hit a two-RBI double to right field, and the Barons took an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Justin Dean hit a single to center field, scoring Yolbert Sanchez and Cal Conley. The Braves (4-10) tied the score at 2-2.

In the bottom of the second inning, Duke Ellis reached on a single to left field; he was balked to second and stole third base, his minor league-leading 15th stolen base of the season. Christopher De Guzman singled home Ellis for the season's first hit and RBI. With the run, the Barons took a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Tim Elko doubled to left field to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Ellis went 2-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base in the win.
