Capitol Broadcasting Company Inc., the parent company of the Durham Bulls, has announced Mike Birling has been promoted from general manager to vice president - baseball operations.
"I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity with CBC," Birling said. "Throughout my time in Durham I've been lucky to work for a company that's given our staff the resources to be successful, and to work with a boss in George Habel who's helped me every step of the way. This new title is a tribute to those who have been around me over the last two decades, and to CBC for giving me the chance to grow."
Birling joined the Bulls at the end of the 1998 season as assistant general manager, and following the 2002 season was elevated to the role of general manager. Over his 19-year tenure in Durham, Birling has twice been named International League Executive of the Year (2003, 2015). Over the last six seasons alone, the Wisonsin native has overseen the four highest-attended seasons in Durham Bulls history (2014-2017), a $20 million stadium renovation and the hosting of the 2012 Triple-A National Championship Game, the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game and the 2013, 2015 and 2016 ACC Baseball Championships. Further, the Bulls have captured two Triple-A National Championship titles and five Governors' Cup titles since 2002.
"From Assistant General Manager when he joined the club two decades ago to now as Vice President - Baseball Operations, Mike Birling has earned his stripes," International League President Randy Mobley said. "Mike is one of those individuals who wouldn't ask someone to do something he hasn't already done or wouldn't do himself. As a leader, Mike sets high expectations for himself and the organization and as a result he has developed into one of the most highly-respected team executives in our industry."
Birling's promotion to vice president - baseball operations is one of three promotions announced by CBC on Nov. 14.
