FAYETTEVILLE – Jesus Chirinos broke a scoreless tie with a go-ahead double in the tenth, relievers Junior Montero and Miguel Guerrero struck out the side in the eighth and ninth respectively, and Brannon Jordan worked a scoreless tenth as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 5-4 in ten on Sunday afternoon at SEGRA Stadium. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Mudcats (14-16, 48-48) and gave them a 3-3 series split with the Woodpeckers (10-19, 41-53).

Tyler Whitaker’s home run to start the second got things going as it was the first run of the game and broke a scoreless tie. Whitaker’s home run was also an inside-the-parker that landed just beyond the reach of Carolina’s right fielder Hendry Mendez. Mendez stumbled forward on the play away from the ball and into the wall align the right field line. Mendez was eventually removed from the game after sustaining an injury.

Down 1-0 after two, the Mudcats went on to score twice in the third with the first coming across on a double steal and the go-ahead coming on a RBI single from Leones. The Carolina lead then went from 2-1 to 3-1 in the fifth when a bases loaded wild pitch lost by newly inserted reliever Jayson Schroeder scored Ferrer from third.

Carolina was up 3-1 going in to the fifth before Cody Orr and Logan Cerny tallied consecutive hits off stater Alexander Cornielle. Cerny’s hit was an RBI single that scored Orr and cut the Carolina lead to 3-2.

Cornielle started for Carolina and went through five full innings with two runs (one earned) allowed on five hits. Cornielle left the game with the Mudcats up 3-2 and finished his start with six strikeouts against three walks.

After reliever Jeison Pena pitched a scoreless sixth, the Mudcats would then take a 4-2 lead in the seventh after Hedbert Perez singled, moved to third on a double from Oswal Leones and then scored on a RBI single from Eduarqui Fernandez.

The 4-2 Carolina lead, however, would be short-lived as Pena would go on to allow two Fayetteville runs in that same seventh while seeing the game lock up at 4-4. Pena allowed two runs and three this in the seventh, including a leadoff single to Orr, a double to Cerny and a two-run double to Whitaker.

The 4-4 tie held from the eighth through the ninth with Montero and Guerrero combining on two scoreless frames and six strikeouts for Carolina. Colton Gordon worked the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth for the Woodpeckers and allowed just one run on three hits. Jacob DeLabio pitched the tenth and allowed the go-ahead run on Chirinos’ double.

The Mudcats had lost three straight in the series before taking Sunday’s finale and leaving Fayetteville with a 3-3 series split.
