CLEARWATER, FL – The two games of the first home doubleheader for the Clearwater Threshers (24-12) could not have been more different, with the Daytona Tortugas (19-17) taking game one 8-5 and the Threshers sealing the split with a 1-0 shutout win in game two on Thursday night at BayCare Ballpark. The Threshers and Tortugas go head-to-head again on Friday evening in the fourth game of the series.
Daytona got the first run of the game on an error in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. A three-run homer by Tortugas outfielder Yerlin Confidan padded Daytona’s lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth. The Threshers had an answer in the home half of the inning.
Bryson Ware and Nikau Pouaka-Grego traded singles to start the bottom of the fourth before Tortuga’s starter Ben Brutti hit Raylin Heredia with a pitch to load the bases. Brutti was replaced on the mound by Cody Adcock, who walked Trent Farquhar to score the Threshers’ first run. Rafael Marchán was hit on the first pitch of the next at-bat to add another run. Jordan Viars drew a two-out walk to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the bases were left loaded in the fourth with the Threshers down one.
The Tortugas scored a run on a double play in the top of the fifth, bringing their lead back up to 5-3. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Pouaka-Grego drew a walk, and moved to second on a single by Avery Owusu-Asiedu. With two outs in the inning, Kotowski sent a double down the leftfield line that plated both baserunners and tied the game at five.
A pair of home runs in the sixth gave Daytona an 8-5 lead. The Threshers had the tying run at the plate in the sixth, but went down in order in the final frame to fall 8-5.
Luke Russo allowed four runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 4.0 innings and a no-decision. Jonathan Petit surrendered one run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout. Chase Hopewell (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout to take the loss. Ethan Chenault allowed one hit and struck out one in 1.0 shutout inning.
GAME TWO
WP: Saul Teran (2-0, 0.00)
LP: Simon Miller (2-2, 3.97)
A pitcher’s duel in the second game of the doubleheader kept the game scoreless until the sixth inning. Daytona’s starter Juan Martinez tossed 5.0 no-hit innings before he was taken out of the game in the bottom sixth. Reliever Simon Miller came to replace him, and Pouaka-Grego sent the first pitch he threw out to centerfield for a double. He was replaced by Bryson Ware as a pinch-runner.
Heredia laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Ware to third. With Aidan Miller at the plate, Miller threw a pitch that ricocheted off the Tortuga’s catcher. It went just far enough away to allow Ware to come home from third to plate the first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Saul Teran struck out the first two batters in the ninth and retired all four batters he faced to seal the 1-0 win for the Threshers.
Braydon Tucker tossed 5.2 shutout frames, allowing three hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a no-decision. Teran struck out in 1.1 scoreless and hitless innings.
