CORPUS CHRISTI – Amarillo rallied for six runs in the ninth inning to upset Corpus Christi, 10-9, in Tuesday’s series opener at Whataburger Field.

The result snapped the Hooks win streak at a season-best four games.

CC trailed the Sod Poodles, 2-0, before Edwin Díaz slugged a two-run home run in the fifth. Díaz has clubbed five home runs in his last seven games.

The Hooks then posted a seven spot in the sixth against relievers Yorvin Pantoja and Josh Green. The 10-batter, five-hit attack was highlighted by two-run singles from Cesar Salazar and Justin Dirden.

Matt Ruppenthal stranded two inherited runners in the sixth and twirled a one-two-three seventh before giving way to Layne Henderson in the eighth.

Henderson retired three of the first four men he faced, with the expectation being a solo home run by Corbin Carroll. The ninth quickly unraveled as the first six Sod Poodles reached via a lead-off walk and five singles. A total of 11 batted in the frame with the winning run ultimately scoring on a Jojanse Torres balk.

The Hooks look to bounce back Wednesday night with Misael Tamarez on the hill. First pitch 6:35.
