DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls split a doubleheader with a 4-2 win and a 5-4 loss to the Gwinnett Stripers on Tuesday night at the DBAP.
In Game 1, the Bulls (70-55) found themselves down 2-0 on a solo home runs by Austin Riley and Danny Santana entering the bottom of the fourth inning, when Christian Arroyo laced a single to centerfield to score Andrew Velazquez cutting the deficit to one. Nate Lowe then launched a two-run home run over the Blue Monster to put the Bulls in front 3-2 through four innings.
The Bulls added another run in the home half of the sixth on a double by Rob Refsnyder, extending the lead to 4-2, which proved to be the final score.
Chih-Wei Hu (W, 5-7) earned his third consecutive win and his fifth win of the season, after allowing two runs on six hits with a season-high seven strikeouts for the third time in the 2018 campaign.
In Game 2, the Bulls opened the scoring as the visiting team with a two-run home run by Austin Meadows for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Stripers (61-64) struck back with a two-run homer from Riley knotting the score 2-2.
Durham extended its lead to 4-2 with another home run, this time a two-run blast by Jason Coats, scoring Refsnyder after he led off the second inning with a walk.
The Stripers grabbed the lead with three unearned runs on a pair of errors in the bottom of the sixth inning, and held off the Bulls' charge in the top of the seventh, leaving the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh to win the second end of the doubleheader 5-4.
The Bulls host the Stripers for a second straight doubleheader beginning at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday at the DBAP. Kolby Allard (6-4, 2.80) is scheduled to start for the Stripers and the Bulls starter is to be announced.
