BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Binghamton Mets and New York Mets are proud to announce a four-year extension of their Player Development Contract, securing the B-Mets as New York's Double-A affiliate through the 2020 season.
Binghamton Mets president Mike Urda shared the news at the team's "Welcome Back B-Mets" dinner on Tuesday night.
"We consider our affiliation with the New York Mets the crown jewel of our assets," said Urda. "Fans can rest assured that the Binghamton Mets and New York Mets will be linked for the next six years."
"We are excited to continue our long-standing partnership with the Binghamton Mets, a partnership that works well for both our players and our fans," said Paul DePodesta, the Mets' VP of Player Development and Amateur Scouting. "Mike Urda and his staff are first class, and we hope to continue to provide them and all B-Mets fans with winning baseball."
Urda continued, "The Mets love their affiliation in Binghamton. As the team's affiliate of the year last season, we take pride in treating every Mets player, manager, coach and visiting member of the front office like family."
The B-Mets current PDC with the New York Mets runs through 2016, but both sides were eager to extend the deal now.
"After extending our lease at NYSEG Stadium through 2021 last year, it only made sense to extend our affiliation with the Mets," explained Urda on the team's motivation to complete the new PDC deal two full seasons prior to the existing deal's expiration.
The announcement comes following a stellar 2014 season that saw the Binghamton Mets win their third Eastern League championship in franchise history. The team snapped a 20-year title drought by sweeping the Richmond Flying Squirrels, clinching the series in front of 5,904 fans at NYSEG Stadium on a walk-off double by Jayce Boyd.
Founded in 1992, after the New York Mets moved the Williamsport Bills to the Southern Tier, the Binghamton Mets have been a proud affiliate since day one. In addition to their three league titles, the team has produced a long list of notable alumni, including 2014 National League Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom and Gold Glove center fielder Juan Lagares.
The Binghamton Mets open their 24th season on Thursday in Akron against the RubberDucks. The B-Mets home opener on Thursday, April 16, highlighted by a championship DVD giveaway, is just nine days away. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting BMETS.COM, going to the NYSEG Stadium box office or by calling 723-METS.
