Cubs Announce Ems Coaching Staff

December 16, 2016

The Chicago Cubs and Eugene Emeralds are happy to announce the coaching staff for the 2017 season. After capturing their first title in over 40 years, the Emeralds are excited to get back on the field with a mix of coaches both new and familiar to the Northwest League.

Leading the Emeralds on the field, and fresh off the 2016 NWL Manager of the Year award, is second year manager Jesus Feliciano. Feliciano led the Emeralds to a league best 54-22 in his first year managing above the Rookie level in the Cubs organization. He guided the Emeralds to a 4-2 record in the playoffs, coming from behind 0-1 to defeat the 2015 NWL Champion Hillsboro Hops and winning a decisive Game 3 against the Everett AquaSox. He enjoyed a 16-year playing career from 1998-2013, including action in 54 games with the Mets in 2010.

David Rosario will take over as pitching coach, coming from the South Bend Cubs in the same position. Rosario led 2016 SB Cubs pitching to a 3.35 ERA, with 11 complete games, 43 saves, and allowed a league low 364 walks. He has spent nine seasons at the Single-A level with the Cubs, including four years in the NWL with Boise.

Juan Cabreja will be the Emeralds hitting coach after serving as an Assistant Coach for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans last year. Cabreja is in his 13th season with the Cubs organization, after managing in both the Dominican Summer League and Arizona League before helping the Pelicans to a Carolina League title in 2016.

Rounding out the Emeralds coaching staff will be another returner from the Eugene championship run. Gary Van Tol comes back to Eugene for his third season, his second as the Assistant Coach to Feliciano. This will be Van Tol's 10th season in the NWL, spending his first seven years with Bosie before leading the Emeralds to a 38-38 record in 2015 and missing the playoffs by one game.
