Ems Fall 11-9 In Seesaw Ballgame

In another wild game North of the border, the Canadians picked up the comeback win over the Emeralds by a final score of 11-9.

In a back-and-forth affair that proved to be one of the wildest games of the season, the Ems struck first and took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Thanks to a pair of two-out doubles by Nick Torres and Jose Urena, three Emeralds runs came in to score and the Ems led 3-0 heading to the bottom of the frame.

The Canadians immediately responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second, and another C's run in the bottom of the second inning would tie the game at 3-3.

After both offenses were held at bay in the third and fourth innings, Vancouver would take their first lead of the ballgame in a two-run bottom of the fifth inning.

Two innings later, eleven Emeralds batters would come to the plate as the Ems put up a whopping six runs in the top of the seventh inning to retake the lead, this time by a score of 9-6.

However, the lead wouldn't last long as the Canadians would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning with five runs of their own. Thanks in part to five singles, three of which never left the infield, the C's cut the Ems' lead to 9-8 while loading the bases with two outs and Franklin Barreto coming to the plate. The Canadians' number three hitter would not disappoint the home crowd, smacking a bases-clearing triple to right field and sending Nat Bailey Stadium into a frenzy as Vancouver took the 11-9 lead.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Joe Lovecchio would come out of the bullpen and pick up his first professional save as the Canadians would hold on to win, 11-9.

Joey Epperson, who was inserted as a defensive substitute for the injured Felipe Blanco, played in the field for the first time since getting injured on June 22nd against the Dust Devils. The former UCSB Gaucho finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a run scored, and a walk. Meanwhile, former college rival and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustang, Nick Torres, finished 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored.

With Thursday night's win, the Canadians stayed just two games back of NWL North Division leader Spokane, while the Ems will look to salvage a win in the series finale. Both teams will face off for the final time in Vancouver on Friday afternoon for another "Nooner at the Nat" with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05pm.
