Hops Avoid Sweep

July 3, 2013

Eugene sent 3rd round pick Bryan Verbitsky to the mound as they attempted to complete the three game sweep over the Hillsboro Hops. Verbitsky pitched around a double in the 1st inning by striking out the side. In the 2nd Jordan Parr leadoff with a walk and after an error by SS Felipe Blanco, Parr scored on a 4-6-3 double play. In the 4th, C Yosbel Gutierrez and DH Tyler Linton each doubled to make it 2-0 Hops.

Verbitsky gave way to reliever Kyle Lloyd after 5 innings, 5 hits, 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. Lloyd issued a one-out walk in the 6th to 1B Ryan Kinsella before allowing a two-run shot to Tyler Linton, his second in as many nights. With the Hops leading 4-0, the Emeralds offense got something going when DH Michael Miller reached on a throwing error. Two batters later Miguel Del Castillo picked up his first RBI of the year with a ground rule double. Eugene made it 4-2 in the 8th after Wynton Bernard leadoff with a double and Trae Santos drove him in with a groundout.

Hillsboro added an insurance run in the top of the 9th. Taylor Ratliff singled and stole second and then came in to score on a Yogi Perez-Ramos RBI double. In the Emeralds last chance in the bottom of the 9th, they would bring the tying run to the plate but Wynton Bernard grounded out and the Ems lost 5-2.

It was a capacity crowd of 5,028 who enjoyed the Independence Day Fireworks celebration after the game. The Ems head to Spokane for a 5-day roadtrip followed by an offday on Tuesday. The Emeralds will be back to PK Park on Wednesday, July 10 to start a 5-game series with the Everett Aquasox. Tickets are available at EmeraldsBaseball.com.
