SeaWolves Find Many Ways to Score in Wild Win over Akron

The SeaWolves (7-4) made it consecutive wins with a 9-3 victory over Akron (6-6). Ty Madden started for Erie. He stranded the bases loaded in the first inning. In the third, Chase DeLauter singled with two out, stole second base, and scored on Aaron Bracho’s single. Akron made it 2-0

The SeaWolves (7-4) made it consecutive wins with a 9-3 victory over Akron (6-6).

Ty Madden started for Erie. He stranded the bases loaded in the first inning. In the third, Chase DeLauter singled with two out, stole second base, and scored on Aaron Bracho’s single.

Akron made it 2-0 when Christian Cairo blasted a solo home run off Madden in the fourth.

Erie’s offense then went to work in the fifth. Jake Holton reached on an error by shortstop Milan Tolentino to begin the inning. With one out, Eliezer Alfonzo and Daniel Cabrera each reached on infield singles to load the bases. Then Carlos Mendoza walked on a pitch timer violation by Akron starter Tommy Mace to force home Erie’s first run. Trei Cruz also walked to tie the game at 2-2.

Mace departed for Lenny Torres Jr., who hit his first batter, Hao-Yu Lee, to force in the go-ahead run. TJ Hopkins made it 4-2 by also drawing a walk. Chris Meyers’ sacrifice fly made it 5-2 Erie. The SeaWolves sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs without a run-scoring hit.

Madden departed after 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Kahlil Watson punched a solo home run against Erie reliever Jake Higginbotham to cut Erie’s lead to 5-3 in the seventh inning.

The SeaWolves extended their lead in the eighth inning. With two runners on and one out, Alfonzo singled home the first run of the frame. With Mendoza batting and two out, Akron reliever Tyler Thornton balked home Gage Workman. Mendoza followed with an RBI single to make it 8-3. Cruz then singled home Mendoza after Mendoza stole second to make it 9-3.

Higginbotham (2-0) earned the win in relief. Mace (1-1) took the loss.

The series continues on Friday at 7:05 p.m. as Jackson Jobe faces Rodney Boone.
