The San Jose Giants and San Francisco Giants together hold one of the longest-running MLB-MiLB partnerships with San Jose having served as an affiliate of San Francisco since 1988 (only 9 other current MLB-MiLB partnerships span a longer stretch of time). Prior to the recent MiLB restructuring, the San Jose Giants were one of the most successful teams in the California League (A-Advanced), capturing league titles in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2010, and the organization has helped develop more than 190 Major League players.

The 2021 season marks a new era in more ways than one for the Ems. Founded in 1955 as a charter member of the Northwest League, the Emeralds operated as an independent franchise until 1959 when they secured their first-ever Major League affiliation with… the San Francisco Giants. Six decades and eight different MLB affiliations later, the Ems are once again a Giants affiliate heading into the new season, the organization’s first year playing a full-season schedule since 1973 and its first-ever season playing at the High-A level.

Sporting one of the more noteworthy team names in all of Minor League Baseball, the Flying Squirrels have called Richmond home since 2010. The team name itself was selected by fans via a Richmond Times-Dispatch readers’ “name-the-team-contest,” beating out other finalists such as the Rock Hoppers, Flatheads, and Hush Puppies. Prior to the Minor League restructuring that took place this past offseason, the Flying Squirrels led the Eastern League (AA) in average attendance in 6 of the 10 seasons that the franchise has played in Richmond.

Despite being a mere two decades old (first season: 2000), the River Cats already boast an impressive history of success with five Pacific Coast League (PCL) championships, the most recent coming in 2019 when they also went on to win the Triple-A National Championship for their third time (2019, 2008, 2007).

Founded in 1883 as the New York Gothams (the team name changed to ‘Giants’ three years later), the Giants were the first-ever major-league organization based in New York City. In 1958, the franchised moved across the country and has since called San Francisco home, continuing be one of the oldest and most successful franchises in all of professional baseball. The Giants have played in the World Series 20 times – a National League record – and the organization’s eight World Series titles rank fifth-most in Major League history.
