Giants Prospect Watch

Entering the 2021 baseball season with the 11th ranked farm system per MLB.com, the San Francisco Giants boast some of the most young and exciting young talent in all of baseball, particularly at the Single-A level. Throughout the 2021 season, we’ll take a look at the Giants prospects making noise up-and-down the farm system, from Rookie ball to Triple-A.

Will Bednar | Position: Right-Handed Pitcher

Team: ACL Giants Orange (Rookie)

San Francisco’s 2021 1st round pick has officially made his pro debut after just recently joining the ACL Giants Orange team, one of two teams that the Giants field in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Through two very brief starts, the 14th overall selection has fired 2.0 scoreless and hitless innings with three strikeouts. Bednar is the younger brother of Pittsburgh Pirates reliever David Bednar and served as the ace on the Mississippi State staff this past collegiate season, helping guide the Bulldogs to their first-ever NCAA championship while winning Most Outstanding Player honors at the College World Series.

Patrick Bailey | Position: Catcher

Team: San Jose Giants (Low-A)

The former first round selection out of North Carolina State started the season with High-A Eugene but struggled to find his form while also dealing with lingering injuries. After briefly being sent down to the ACL to rehab and shore up some lingering physical ailments, Bailey has hit his stride with Low-A San Jose. Through 37 games with the SJ Giants, Bailey is slashing .314/.410/.533 with 12 doubles, 6 homers and 17 RBIs. The defensive-minded backstop is coming off a sensational month of August in which he batted .333 with 4 HRs and 8 RBIs while also earning Low-A West Player of the Week during that stretch.

Aeverson Arteaga | Position: Shortstop

Team: ACL Giants Orange (Rookie)

While Marco Luciano has garnered plenty of headlines during his rise through ranks, there’s another teenage shortstop in the Giants system that’s catching plenty of praise, too. Just 18-years-old, Arteaga is already considered one of the best prospects in what is a deep and talented San Francisco system, and it’s easy to see why. Signed for $1 million in the 2019 international class, the Venezuelan infielder is batting .326 with 11 doubles, 9 homers and 41 RBIs in 49 games played during what has been his first professional season. Per MLB.com, “Arteaga stands out most with his defensive ability. His quickness and instincts give him plenty of range, and he has the fast hands and solid arm strength to get rid of the ball quickly and make any throw needed.”
