Ems Earn Series Split With Hawks

Eugene, OR - With the Cubs' World Series Trophy visiting town, the Emeralds gave a 2016 flashback performance, banging out nine hits and allowing just one run in a 3-1 victory over the Boise Hawks in front of 4,114 at PK Park on Tuesday.

The win placed the Ems two games above the Hawks in the overall standing, giving them a chance to make the playoffs if the Hillsboro Hops win the second half.

A stellar performance by Jose Albertos (2-1, 2.64 ERA) propelled the Ems (33-32, 12-15) to their second straight win. His five innings of work saw just one Hawks' (31-34, 12-15) run cross the plate and even then, a Boise player never drove in the run.

Steven Linkous led-off the game with a ball right back to Albertos, who deflected it away from Rafael Narea, and then advanced to third on two wild pitches. A third wild pitch brought Linkous in to score but that would be all that Albertos would allow.

The Ems would get the run back and more in second when Jose Gonzalez tripled to deep center field, scoring Will Remillard and Jared Young. Gonzalez has come up big for the Ems in the last five days, getting five hits and five RBI over that span.

One more run crossed the plate in the fifth after Jhonny Bethencourt walked with two-outs, stole a base, and then scored on a wild pitch that catcher Austin Bernard threw into left field, allowing Bethencourt to score.

Albertos struck out eight over his five innings of work, and let just three Hawks batters reach first after the first inning. He gave up just the one run on four hits and two walks before giving way to Keegan Thompson.

Though he has struggled at times this season, Thompson, a third-round pick from Auburn, pitched three near-perfect innings, allowing just one hit and three strikeouts while essentially shutting the door on the Hawks.

Luis Aquino found redemption after blowing the first game of the series with a perfect ninth, striking out a pair before getting former Emerald Sam Tidaback to end the game.

A series with Salem-Keizer starts on Wednesday for Pirates at PK Park night. Game starts at 7:05 PM with gates opening at 6 PM. Tickets can be purchased at emeraldsbaseball.com or by calling the box office at 541-342-5367.
