Charleston, SC - It was another huge inning early for the Charleston RiverDogs (17-9) that led them past the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (9-17) Saturday night. Charleston scored four runs in the second inning and never looked back in their 6-1 victory at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark.

The inning began with a double from RiverDogs left fielder Oneill Manzueta off of Fayetteville starter Edinson Batista (L, 1-1). The next batter, Michael Berglund, tripled to center to bring in Manzueta and open the scoring. A base hit from Abiezel Ramirez scored Berglund to quickly double the lead to 2-0. Later in the frame with two runners in scoring position, Shane Sasaki came through with Charleston’s third extra base hit of the inning, a two-run double to cap off a four-run second inning.

After a scoreless first three innings at the plate, Fayetteville broke through in the run column in the fourth. One-out singles from Quincy Hamilton and Joey Loperfido set the table for Miguel Palma, who flared a single into shallow right to bring home Hamilton and cut the lead to 4-1. However, Charleston responded in the bottom half of the inning as a balk from Batista allowed Ramirez to trot home, making it 5-1. The RiverDogs added another in the bottom of the eighth when Berglund doubled to right, scoring Willy Vazquez.

A one-out double by Loperfido in the ninth gave the Woodpeckers a glimmer of hope, but RiverDogs relief pitcher Jack Snyder got Victor Mascai to ground into a game-ending double play to secure the series-clinching victory.

The two teams wrap up their series Sunday afternoon as RHP Deylen Miley looks to halt the slide for Fayetteville on the mound. For Charleston, RHP Logan Workman will try to make it five out of six wins at home. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 ET.
