Charleston, SC - A grand slam from Charleston RiverDogs (18-9) second baseman Abiezel Ramirez was the big blow that sunk the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (9-18) Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark. The RiverDogs took the series finale by a score of 6-0 and won five out of the six games in the first series between the two teams in 2022.

Deylen Miley held the Charleston offense at bay over the first four innings, keeping the RiverDogs scoreless while allowing just one hit and striking out eight batters. It was the third appearance of the season for Miley where he did not give up a single run.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Charleston shortstop Carson Williams launched a Carlos Calderon (L, 1-1) pitch just over the left field wall for a solo home run. Later in the inning, a single and back to back walks loaded the bases for Ramirez, who drove one over everything in right center field to blow the game open to 5-0. It was the first home run of the season for Ramirez. The RiverDogs grabbed another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when a wild pitch from Woodpeckers reliever Kasey Ford allowed Willy Vazquez to score.

It was a team effort for Charleston on the mound as six different pitchers held the Fayetteville offense to just two hits, including a triple from Kenedy Corona. The RiverDogs kept the Woodpeckers off the scoreboard over the final 14 innings of the series.

Fayetteville will have Monday off before resetting against the Carolina Mudcats back home at Segra Stadium on Tuesday in a six-game series. It will be the first of 24 games between the two division rivals this season after Carolina took last year’s season series, 14-10. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 ET with both starting pitchers to be announced.
