Kannapolis, NC – The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (17-28) ended their eight-game losing streak on Memorial Day at Atrium Health Ballpark with a 3-1 win over the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (23-22). Fayetteville has now won two of its last three against the Cannon Ballers.

Ricardo Balogh got the Woodpeckers on the board in the top of the first inning. After Zach Cole led off the game with a walk, the rehabbing Zach Daniels replaced him at first on a fielder’s choice before advancing to third on a fielding error from Kannapolis. That brought up Balogh, who lifted a fly ball to left field that brought Daniels home on a sacrifice fly.

Things were quiet offensively up until the top of the fifth when Dauri Lorenzo began the frame with a single off Cannon Ballers starter Drew McDaniel (L, 2-4). Leosdany Molina followed with a single of his own. Two batters later, Daniels laced a ground ball down the left field line to chase both men home and push Fayetteville’s lead to three.

On the mound, starter Nolan DeVos went three scoreless innings, surrendering zero hits and two walks while striking out a pair. He was lifted ahead of the fourth in favor of Jose Guedez (W, 1-0), who shut down Kannapolis over his first three innings of work. In the bottom of the seventh, Guedez ran into a bit of trouble as Bryce Willits got the Ballers on the board with an RBI single. With runners at the corners and no outs, Guedez struck out three consecutive batters to escape the jam. He finished his outing going 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on five hits with six strikeouts.

Guedez handed the ball off to Kasey Ford, who came on with two away in the bottom of the eighth. Ford got Tim Elko to pop out to end the inning, then struck out the side in order to earn his first save of the season with the Woodpeckers.

Both teams will get Tuesday off before resuming the rest of their six-game series on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 ET.
