Fayetteville, NC – For the second time in three games the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (8-4) pitching staff spun a shutout, striking out 16 Fredericksburg Nationals (7-5) Thursday in a 4-0 victory at Virginia Credit Union Stadium. Four arms in Alonzo Tredwell, Kelly Austin, Colby Langford and Amilcar Chirinos combined to blank the Carolina League’s top scoring offense.

Tredwell, the second round pick from 2023, struck out the first four batters he faced, seven total on the night, and cruised through 3.1 innings without allowing a hit in just his second pro start. He was handed a 1-0 lead before throwing a single pitch, thanks to an RBI single in the top of the first from Juan Santander.

Santander struck again in the top of the third, ripping an RBI double to the left center field wall off Jose Atencio (L, 1-1) that scored Kenni Gomez.

The 2-0 lead held intact all the way through eight innings. Austin recorded the final two outs of the fourth inning behind Tredwell, then cut down the Fredericksburg side in order in the fifth. Langford (W, 2-0) kept it rolling on the hill come the sixth, striking out four of the first six batters he faced. The lefty worked around a single and a walk in the seventh, using a double play ball and a groundout from Phillip Glasser to close three scoreless innings of relief.

A pair of insurance runs crossed in the top of the night after Fayetteville loaded the bases with no outs against Mason Denaburg. Alberto Hernandez cashed in with an RBI single to left field, then Anthony Sherwin capped the scoring with a grounder to first that drove in Xavier Casserilla.

Chirinos entered to pitch the ninth and quickly retired three straight FredNats bats to seal the game.

The six-game road series continues on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Fayetteville is projected to start RHP Alain Pena and Fredericksburg will counter with RHP Jarlin Susana. The Woodpeckers radio broadcast can be heard at fayettevillewoodpeckers.com or through the MiLB App. The Woodpeckers return home on Tuesday, April 23rd for a six-game series against the Down East Wood Ducks.
