After a couple of series splits for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers against the Augusta GreenJackets and the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, it’s time for another edition of the Fayetteville Field Report! Here are some of the biggest stories surrounding the Woodpeckers over the past couple of weeks.

WALK ORR HIT

Whether it be via walks or hits, Woodpeckers infielder Cody Orr has found ways to consistently reach base over the last couple of weeks. Orr currently owns a 16 game on-base streak, the longest such streak by a Fayetteville batter this season. It is also the longest active Carolina League streak and is the second-longest of the season across the league, trailing only Fredericksburg's Brady House, who reached base in 18 straight games.

Orr’s ability to reach base has also benefited his on-base percentage, which has climbed to .409 on the year, the 14th highest in the league. The Woodpeckers infielder had a five-game hitting streak from April 16 to April 23 as well, where he was six-for-sixteen with a home run and three runs batted in.

ERNESTO JA-K-EZ

Ernesto Jaquez had one of the best starts to the season of any Carolina League arm. He delivered another dominating mound performance on April 20 in Augusta, striking out ten GreenJackets over 4.0 scoreless innings en route to his first save. He combined with Carlos Calderon to record 17 of 27 outs via strikeout, the most K's in a 9-inning game this season. After four appearances for Fayetteville, Jaquez ranked third in strikeouts (29), fifth in WHIP (0.93), eighth in ERA (2.45), and second in opponent batting average (.145).

The strong start for Jaquez paid dividends on Thursday when the righthander was called up to High-A Asheville. This is Jaquez’s second stint with the Tourists after he pitched eight games for them last season.

PITCHING WITH GUSTO

Jaquez isn’t the only Fayetteville arm to impress early on in 2022. Ryan Gusto has also pushed himself to the top of many Carolina League pitching statistical categories. The Astros’ 2021 11th-round draft pick is currently seventh in ERA (2.25), third in WHIP (0.90), and fourth in opponent batting average (.162).

Gusto had the best start by a Woodpeckers pitcher this season Saturday night against Kannapolis, going six scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out six. He has not allowed any runs over his last ten innings pitched, the longest such streak by a Fayetteville pitcher this year.

MASTERFUL MASCAI

It was a bit of a slow start offensively for first baseman Victor Mascai this season, but he has quickly turned it around at the plate. Since April 19, Mascai is hitting .360 with a pair of home runs and seven runs batted in. He also has a 1.194 OPS, the fourth-highest in the league over that span, and has reached base in seven of his last eight games.

The big highlight for him was a tape-measure shot he hit on Saturday afternoon that helped power Fayetteville past Kannapolis, 2-1.

UP NEXT

The Woodpeckers head back out on the road to Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark for a six-game series against the 2021 Low-A East Champion Charleston RiverDogs (Low-A Tampa Bay Rays). Tampa Bay currently has the third-best farm system according to MLB.com, but the Rays boasted the top farm system in baseball throughout the previous three seasons. Top prospects on the RiverDogs roster include infielders Carson Williams, Willy Vasquez and Cooper Kinney as well as pitchers Cole Wilcox, Sandy Gaston, and JJ Goss.

Charleston comes in at 13-8 on the season, just two games out of first place in the South Division. Last year, the Woodpeckers were stifled in the lone series they played against the RiverDogs, losing all six games on the road in May. The Woodpeckers will return to Segra Stadium on May 10th for a six-game series hosting the Carolina Mudcats (Low-A Milwaukee Brewers).
