Jack Murphy Powers Cavalry to Historic Win

Catcher named MVP as Canberra wins historic Asia Series
November 25, 2013

In case you didn't notice, Jack Murphy is a big deal, wherever he goes. Last off-season, he starred for the Canberra Cavalry, who took home their first Claxton Shield as champions of the Australian Baseball League. After returning from the Land Down Under with flowing locks and a ferocious mustache, Murphy was a fan favorite and led the Fisher Cats in games caught in his first full Double-A season this past summer.

Fast forward a few months and Murphy is back at it again. Only this time, the Cavalry spread their winning ways to international waters. Canberra became the first Australian Baseball League team to win the Asia Series by romping the Taiwanese Champions last week in the final game, 14-4.

Canberra was chosen to represent the ABL in the Asia Series by winning the ABL title last year. They faced the top teams in Asia and Europe, including champions Chinese, Japanese, and Korean professional leagues.

Murphy, who struggled to open the tournament, came through in the clutch. He bashed the game-winning home run in extra innings during the semi-finals. Against Taiwan in the finals, he added two more hits, including a grand slam and seven total runs batted in.

Murphy and Canberra are back in Australia to continue the ABL season. Murphy is hitting .317 for the 8-3 Cavalry, who sit in first place in the league.
