Final Score Keys 8 and Scrappers 3

Frederick, MD – A rain delay and sporadic showers couldn’t dampen the Keys’ offense Thursday night as they win 8 – 3 in 6 innings to finish out the final 2023 home series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

After a delayed start due to rain, it was 6 up and 6 down to begin the game.

In the top of the 2nd inning, pitcher Walker Zander gave up a single to T.J. Reeves. Braylin Marine grounded into a 6-4-3 double play clearing the bases. Omar Veloz doubled to left to put the Scrappers first running in scoring position, but he was stranded at second after Owen Young grounded out to the pitcher.

Matt Comnos gave up a walk, a stolen base to Trenton Jamison, and 2 more consecutive walks to start the bottom of the 2nd innings. Roberto Peña singled into left, scoring two runs, and then stole second base. Catcher Omar Veloz made a throwing error, scoring Logan Thomason from third. Hernan Yanez walked and was moved into scoring position by an infield single by Brandon Fields. The Keys led 3-0 heading into the top of the third.

After a flyout by Garrett Wallace, Christian Johnson singled to center field. However, D’aires Davis grounded into a double play ending the inning.

Jamison started off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to third base on a single by Reeves. A wild pitch by Comnos moved Reeves allowed Thomason to move to second. Roberto Pena walked to load the bases. Hernan Yanez made the score 4-0 Keys with a ground ball to second base and Logan Thomason stole home to increase the score to 5-0.

The Scrappers mounted a two-out comeback in the top of the fourth inning after a walk by T.J. Reeves. Braylin Marine tripled to right field, scoring Reeves and making the score 5-1. Veloz scored Marine from third on a line drive double to center field. A throwing error by Drew Reckart scored Veloz from third making the score 5-3 going into the bottom of the 4th inning.

Frederick tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the 4th inning after three consecutive singles by Drew Reckart, Hylan Hall, and Zaid Walker.

Logan Thomason led off the bottom of the 5th inning with a single to center, followed by a single by Roberto Pena. Yanez was walked again to load the bases. Logan Thomason scored from third base on a sacrifice fly to right field by Brandon Fields.

Nathan Medrano replaced Matt Comnos in the bottom of the sixth inning. With rain beginning to fall, Hylan Hall doubled to left field and scored on a single by Zaid Walker making the score 8-3. Several pitches were thrown to Thomason, but increasing rain intensity caused the game to be delayed, and eventually called as an official game in six innings.
