Greenville Outlasts Hickory 2-1 in 15 Innings
In the 15th inning, Drive leadoff hitter Ryan Lavarnway reached on a throwing error by Crawdads' shortstop Edward Martinez. The next batter, Kade Keowen reached on a bunt single. After a failed sacrifice attempt, Peter Hissey advanced the runners on an infield hit, with 2B Jake Kaase knocking the ball down to keep Lavarnway from scoring. Crawdads reliever Joseph Ortiz struck out Jonathan Hee, then induced a ground ball by Oscar Tejada to third. However, 3B Matt West could not field the ball cleanly, allowing Lavarnway to score the winning run.
The strong, early season starting pitching continued for Hickory on Tuesday. In his first start as a professional, after 20 relief appearances last season, starter Cliff Springston pitched a team high seven innings, allowing only one run on three hits, striking out three. In six starts this season by Crawdads' starters, totaling 32 innings pitched, they have allowed only five earned runs on 19 hits and six walks.
Hickory took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning off Greenville starter Brock Huntzinger. With two outs and the bases empty, the Crawdads strung together three straight singles. Eric Fry singled to center and went to third on a single by West. Fry scored on a single by Jared Bolden just under the glove of second baseman Ryan Dent.
Greenville tied the game at 1-1 in the 5th inning. Tim Federowicz led off the inning with an infield hit just off the glove of West at third. Federowicz advanced to second on a sharp grounder by Michael Almanzar off the back of Springston. One out later, Federowicz scored on a line single to left by Kade Keowen.
Hickory had a chance to take the lead in the 6th as they loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a fielding error by Greenville, but reliever Fabian Williamson induced Timmy Rodriguez to hit a grounder to short to end the inning.
After a one out single in the 7th inning by Crawdads' catcher Doug Hogan, the Drive relief corp of Williamson, Armando Zerpa and Lance McClain combined to retired the next 23 Crawdads hitters.
While the Crawdads' offense sputtered, Greenville had several chances to end the game in extra innings. The Drive put runners in scoring position in the 10th, 11th and 12th inning, and left the bases loaded in the 14th inning before the winning run scored one inning later.
McClain (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Greenville (4-2), while Ortiz (0-1) took the loss for Hickory (3-3).
The same two teams meet again on Wednesday night at Fluor Field at West End in Greenville, SC. Game time is 7pm. Probables: Hickory - Wilfredo Boscan (0-1, 1.93); Greenville - Stolmy Pimentel (0-0, 3.60)
