The Hill City Howlers (18-31) won a low-scoring affair over the Charleston RiverDogs (27-23) by a 4-3 margin Wednesday.
The Howlers earned their first win of the series to knot it up 1-1, picked up by a strong night from the pitching staff.
Ryan Prager, Carson Lane, Manuel Osorio and Ryan Bilka combined to hold Charleston to only five hits, a tough feat given the RiverDogs lead the Carolina League with a .256 batting average.
While Hill City only went 1-12 with runners in scoring position, the team still managed some timely hits.
Those came early, in the second inning. Yeiferth Castillo and Jhorvic Abreus teamed up at the bottom of the order for a pair of RBI hits. Castillo got Erick Dessens home on a single while Abreus tripled Castillo home to leap in front 2-0 in the frame.
The Howlers tacked on another in the fourth when Abreus and Castillo got involved again, this time with some help from the fielders. Abreus reached on an error, allowing the outfielder Castillo to score on the ground ball to make it 3-0 Hill City.
The fourth inning would also mark the end of Howlers lefty Ryan Prager’s start. He went four shutout innings and struck out six in a strong effort.
Charleston chipped in its first run in the sixth on a Brody Donay solo shot to dead center field. The blast made it a 3-1 ballgame, still in favor of the Howlers.
Hill City would retain a three-run advantage the next inning. Deiten Lachance belted a sacrifice fly to plate the game’s fourth Howlers run.
The RiverDogs retaliated in the bottom of the frame to make it a one-run game. Slater de Brun scored on a Manuel Osorio wild pitch, and Taitn Gray singled home Cooper Flemming to make it 4-3.
The Howlers managed to hold on thanks to Ryan Bilka’s efforts. The 2026 draft pick tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first professional save.
The Howlers move on to game three of the second half of a two-week road trip tomorrow in Charleston. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 EST and the stream can be found on Bally Live.
