The Hill City Howlers (19-34) split its Sunday doubleheader with the Charleston RiverDogs (30-24) and took the series loss 4-2.
Catcher Deiten Lachance had his biggest day as a Howler, collecting five hits, including a homer, double and two RBIs in the doubleheader.
Game one began Saturday night and was halted in the second inning with a 1-0 Hill City lead courtesy of Lachance’s first professional home run.
Things resumed earlier today and the RiverDogs tied things up quickly on a Dean Moss RBI single in the third inning.
The two teams then traded a run apiece in the fifth, with Alejandro Blasco blasting his first Hill City homer in the top of the frame and Moss striking again on his second RBI single in the bottom.
It didn’t take much longer for Deiten Lachance to make another impact with the bat for the Howlers. The catcher notched his third hit and gave Hill City the lead with an RBI single to make it 3-2 in the seventh.
Charleston quickly swung things in its direction in the bottom of the seventh, putting up a three-spot to snare a 5-3 lead.
The Howlers countered with two runs in the eighth on Alejandro Garza’s two-run single and tacked on one more in the ninth but ultimately fell on their third walk-off loss of the week.
The second game started quiet on both sides. Carson Lane impressed for Hill City as the game’s opener, going two hitless frames with a pair of strikeouts, but Charleston struck after he left the game.
The RiverDogs grabbed two runs in the third on a Cooper Flemming single to take the game’s first lead and their staff held the Howlers down until the fifth inning.
In the fifth, Pedro Dalmagro got things started with an RBI single, then Alejandro Blasco picked up where he left off in the first game and ripped a two-run single to hop into the lead.
Charleston left fielder Jack Lines tied things up in the seventh on an RBI double, and the RiverDogs would score two more runs in the eighth and ninth innings but it wouldn’t be enough.
The Howlers put up four more runs, including three in the ninth, to lock down the win, their second of the series.
The Howlers return to City Stadium for the final time this year Tuesday to host the Kannapolis Cannonballers. First pitch is set for 6:30.
