Blake Brown went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, but Lynchburg's losing streak increased to eight Friday night as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans used two different four-run frames to claim an 8-2 victory over the Hillcats in the series opener at Calvin Falwell Field.
Myrtle Beach (76-52) plated the first four runs of the game in the second inning and led for the duration. Royce Bolinger began the stanza with a double. Christopher Bostick singled, and Chris Grayson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kellin Deglan knocked in two with a base hit to right field. Luis Mendez brought home a run on an RBI groundout, and Lewis Brinson's single drove in Deglan to put the Pelicans in front, 4-0.
Jarett Miller (8-9) did not make it out of the fourth inning and suffered the loss after four runs on five hits. He struck out two, walked three, and hit two other batters. Ryan Bores (1-4) earned his first victory after holding Lynchburg to one run in five hits. Nate Hyatt tossed 2.1 scoreless innings out of the Hillcats' bullpen, while David Peterson shut down the Pelicans for two frames.
Lynchburg's (62-67) first run came in the fifth when Levi Hyams doubled to right, and Blake Brown hit a double to left for his 14th RBI with the Hillcats. Lynchburg tallied its final run in the eighth after Kevin Ahrens singled to score Eric Garcia, who reached on a walk. Ahrens' team-best 58th RBI made the score 8-2.
Myrtle Beach's second four-run outburst occurred in the seventh when Mauricio Cabrera entered from the bullpen and issued three walks along with an RBI single by Bolinger. Peterson relieved Cabrera before the right-hander could record an out. Peterson allowed his two inherited runners to score on a base hit by Deglan and a double by Nick Vickerson.
