IMPACTING IOWA
On the minor league side, Chicago completed deals with two young lefties: Daniel Camarena and Kyle Ryan.
Camerena, 25, was drafted by the Yankees in the 20th round in 2011 out of Cathedral Catholic (CA) HS. The starter has made it to Triple-A in each of the last two seasons, logging a career-high seven games with Scranton Wilkes-Barre in 2017. The then-24-year-old posted a 4-2 record with a 3.28 ERA (12ER/35.2IP), while walking 11 and fanning 30. He spent the balance of the season with Double-A Trenton, going 2-4 with a 3.81 (35ER/82.2IP) clip.
Ryan, 26, has shuttled between Detroit and Triple-A Toledo since 2014. A 12th round pick in 2010, Ryan moved to his debut with the Tigers in 2014 at 22 years old. Since, Ryan has collected an 8-6 record with a 3.86 ERA (55ER/128.0IP) in 86 big league games (7GS). Ryan logged his most time in the majors in 2016, when he appeared in 56 games, going 4-2 with a 3.07 (19ER/55.2IP) mark.
CHICAGO CUBS
The annual Cubs Convention in Chicago last weekend spurred a flurry of moves as the Cubs added security to their current roster. Most notably, Chicago avoided arbitration with Kris Bryant as the 26-year-old signed for a record $10.85 million for 2018. Infielders Addison Russell and Tommy La Stella, as well as pitchers Kyle Hendricks and Justin Wilson also agreed to one-year deals.
Russell agreed to a $3.2 million paycheck in 2018, while Hendricks signed for $4.175 million. Wilson inked a deal for $4.25 million, while La Stella will take in $950,000 in 2018.
FORMER I-CUBS
According to Baseball America, 2017 I-Cub Dylan Floro signed a free agent deal with the Cincinnati Reds. The righty shuttled between Iowa and Chicago last season, before getting DFA'd and picked up by the Dodgers at the trade deadline. He spent the balance of the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Righty Austin Bibens-Dirkx, with Iowa 2010-11, re-signed with Texas to a minor league contract with a spring training invite. The 32-year-old made headlines last season when he was called up for the first time in his 12th minor league season. He appeared in 24 games for the Rangers, going 5-2 with a 4.67 ERA (36ER/69.1IP).
Eric Jokisch is on his way to Oakland's organization after spending the last two seasons bouncing around the PCL. The righty spent parts of three seasons with Iowa (2014-16). Jokisch signed a minor league deal with the A's with an invite to spring training.
Catcher Tim Federowicz, with Iowa in 2016, inked a deal with the reigning World Series Champion Houston Astros and grabbed an invite to spring training. For the 30-year-old, this will be his fifth organization in five seasons. Federowicz has logged 30 big league games over the last two seasons.
