We'd like to promise that every game at Principal Park is played in perfect conditions; sunny skies and comfortable temperatures, but that's not possible. Mother Nature controls that, and we do the best we can. Here's some information to help you understand our weather policy.

If it is raining before the game...

The Iowa Cubs have every intention of playing each game, even when the weather forecast may be calling for rain. Our playing surface features a state-of-the-art drainage system in the outfield and an oversized tarp to cover the infield. This combination allows us a great chance to play ball regardless of the amount of rain that might fall prior to a game. The Iowa Cubs grounds crew will be hard at work to maintain and prepare the field for each and every game. A decision to play, suspend, or postpone often will NOT be made prior to the scheduled start time of any game, and a game's start time will more likely be delayed before an official decision is made. This is done to allow for additional time to evaluate the weather forecast for the area.

There is NO SET TIME for the postponement of a game due to weather. Each weather situation is different and includes unique variables and circumstances. Any time weather is an issue, we weigh factors that include the amount of rain the field has already absorbed and future forecasts, including likelihood of future rain, possible rain duration, and the severity of additional weather. The decision to postpone a game due to weather is made with these, and many other, factors in mind. The most important factor we consider is the safety of our fans and the players.

Incidentally, the decision to postpone a game before it starts is made by the front office. But the moment lineup cards are exchanged at home plate, the authority to postpone, delay or suspend a game switches to the umpires. Their decision cannot be overridden.

Please keep in mind weather forecasts in our area (TV and radio) are intended to cover an area of well over 500 square miles. We utilize multiple sources, including a professional weather service and radar, to pinpoint the weather at our specific location in Des Moines and give us forecasts specific to our location. It may very well be raining at your house, but be sunny with blue skies at the ballpark.

If the game is postponed before the scheduled first pitch, the decision will be immediately posted on our website and social media pages, and will promptly be disseminated to local news outlets.

Rainout ticket policy

In the event the game is rained out and postponed before the game starts, your ticket will be good for any regular-season game later in the season (except July 4th) and may be exchanged at the ticket office for a ticket of equal or lesser value subject to availability.

In most instances, a game postponed due to weather is made up as part of a double header the following day. You are NOT REQUIRED to use your tickets for the next day's game. We give you the opportunity to choose a remaining date that fits your schedule, based on ticket availability. Whatever date you choose, your tickets from the postponed game need to be exchanged with our ticket office for the new date. We cannot guarantee the same exact seat location for the new date.

In the event the game is started and rained out -- 5 innings of a game are not completed, except when the home team is in the lead at the end of 4-1/2 innings -- your ticket will be good for any regular-season game later in the season (except July 4th) and may be exchanged at the ticket office for a ticket of equal or lesser value subject to availability.

Note -- If a game is called due to inclement weather or other circumstances after five innings have been played, a game is considered officially completed.

Suspended game -- A game in which five innings are not completed before being postponed will be suspended and picked up at the point of suspension on the following day or the next time the Iowa Cubs play that team again. If we do not play that team again, the game will not be completed. Fans, however, will be able to use their tickets from that game for any subsequent regular-season Iowa Cubs game (except July 4th).

If you have tickets from one of these dates, those tickets are now rain checks which may be exchanged for another regular season game (except July 4th), based upon availability.
